Vampire of Sacramento

The Investigations -methods, media, trial & verdict

Richard Chase was arrested after many neighbours noticed his strange behaviour and similarity in looks to a wanted poster. Police and detectives were called to his house and they soon found their killer. There was evidence everywhere. Blood stains were all over his t-shirt and his house. Body organs and bones could be found lying around and the smell of blood could be smelt.

This case was heavily covered by the media and a trial was held in 1979, though it had to be moved to San Jose because residents from Sacramento feared and hated him.

The Trial was held on January the 2nd, 1979. He was charged for six accounts of murder. Ronald W. Tochterman was the lead prosecutor for the Richard Chase case. He seeked a death penalty for Richard Chase.

Richard pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity. Over the trial period, over a dozen psychiatrists had examined him and blood tests were taken. They concluded even if he were slightly delusional, he would still be able to tell right from wrong.

One of the witnesses in the trial was David Wallin, the husband of victim Teresa Wallin. He recounted his story of coming home to the horror of a crime scene. After David Wallin gave his case, over 100 other witnesses came out and supported him.

Chase also had his say in the trial. He stated that he was only semi conscious while murdering Wallin and admitted to  drinking her blood while shooting a baby in the head and decapitating it. He also said he was sorry for the murders.

After 4 months, the trial ended. Richard Trenton Chase was pronounced GUILTY at court by the judge and jury, and sentenced to death.

While he was held in prison, many inmates feared him, as they had heard of what he had done, and tried to convince him to commit suicide.

Richard Chase was found lying dead in his cell, on an overdose of medication on December 26th, 1980.
